Senator Britt continues to work with her colleagues in the Senate and through her role on the Senate Appropriations Committee to advance spending measures that are judicious and strategic, while standing up for Alabama’s people, values, and interests.
Senator Britt knows that our ballooning national debt is an economic and security crisis. She believes that we can’t continue to recklessly pile this burden on the backs of our children and our children’s children. The American people deserve accountability over wasteful spending, and we accomplish that by prioritizing the spending of taxpayer dollars in a responsive and responsible manner.
Fixing the broken system that has led to our skyrocketing national debt is also a top priority for Senator Britt. The American people are tired of seeing critical government services being held hostage while Democrats in Congress irresponsibly shut down the government to prioritize illegal aliens over American citizens. Taxpayers and the hardworking men and women of our government agencies shouldn’t be forced to keep paying the price for budgetary political brinksmanship.
Senator Britt is a proud cosponsor of the bipartisan No Budget, No Pay Act to prevent members of Congress from receiving their paychecks if they fail to do their most basic job of funding the federal government. During the past Democrat-led shutdowns in the 119th Congress, Senator Britt has requested the Financial Clerk of the Senate withhold her paycheck and has consistently called for her colleagues to do the same, in addition to pushing to pass this legislation. She has also continued to call for passing the No Shutdown Paychecks to Politicians Act to prevent members of Congress from receiving their paychecks in the event of a government shutdown.
Additionally, Senator Britt is a proud cosponsor of the Prevent Government Shutdowns Act of 2025, legislation that would permanently end the practice of shutting down the federal government and disrupting critical services if Congress fails to enact spending bills by the start of the next fiscal year. Under the bill’s provisions, if Congress does not enact all 12 appropriations bills on time, an automatic 14-day CR would be triggered to keep government funding at the previous fiscal year’s levels—continuing on a rolling basis until either all appropriations bills are enacted or a long-term CR is enacted. This fail-safe mechanism would take drastic options off the table, so members of the Senate and the House have time to draft the best bills possible for American families. This bill would also require Members of Congress to remain in Washington, D.C., until spending bills are completed.
