U.S. Senators Katie Britt, Colleagues Introduce Resolutions Supporting Law Enforcement in Honor of National Police Week
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Katie Britt (R-Ala.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, joined several of her Senate colleagues this week in introducing bipartisan resolutions in honor of National Police Week.
“It’s an honor to join my colleagues in observing National Police Week. Our bipartisan resolution recognizes the valor, dignity, and dedication of our incredible law enforcement officers. Those who wear the uniform and stand with integrity to protect the liberties we cherish so deeply are owed a great debt of gratitude by our nation. I’m deeply thankful for their continued service to the state of Alabama and our entire country,” said Senator Britt.
Senators Britt, Bill Cassidy (R-La.), and 10 of their Senate colleagues introduced a bipartisan resolution recognizing law enforcement officers for their diligence in protecting and serving our communities and calling for increased health and safety measures for law enforcement professionals.
“As hostility toward police officers grows, threats to their safety increase. We must support those who risk their lives daily to protect our communities,” said Dr. Cassidy.
Senator Britt also joined Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Ranking Member Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), and a group of 78 bipartisan senators in introducing a resolution designating May 12 through 17 as National Police Week. Their resolution also recognizes the 234 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in 2024.
The Senators’ resolution passed the Senate by unanimous consent.
“Law enforcement officers in Iowa and across the nation work tirelessly to protect and serve our communities. This week, and every week, we should give our thanks to the brave men and women in blue, who have sacrificed so much to ensure our safety,”Chairman Grassley said. “As always, I’m proud to back the blue and will continue my efforts in Congress to protect and support our courageous officers.”
Senator Britt has worked diligently in the Senate to ensure our nation’s exemplary law enforcement officers have the tools and resources they need to protect families and communities, as well as themselves. In January, Senator Britt’s S.5, the Laken Riley Act, wassigned into law by President Trump as the most significant immigration enforcement and border security related bill to be enacted into law in nearly three decades.
The Laken Riley Act included Senator John Cornyn’s (R-Texas) amendment mirroring the POLICE Act, which expanded the list of criminal offenses covered by the bill to include assault of a law enforcement officer. Senator Britt has previously stated thePOLICE Act would “ensure our brave law enforcement officers, firefighters, and first responders are strongly protected.”
Recently, she joined Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) in introducing the Agent Raul Gonzalez Officer Safety Act, legislation that would make it a crime to flee from agents or officers in the performance of their duties. “This legislation honors Agent Gonzalez who sacrificed his life to protect American citizens and would help ensure this kind of tragedy does not happen to another agent or officer keeping our families and communities safe,” said Senator Britt on introduction.
